Is there a 'Crisis' in UK State Schools? What can we do to help with the recruitment and retention of high quality teachers?
I bought your book in an attempt to figure out what I should do. All I can say is THANK YOU. I think you've saved my career. I realised that I am not alone, that I need to make something good happen rather than mope about this wrong fit and seek out schools that inspire me and give me freedom to be myself. I feel a renewed sense of dedication and drive and I look forward to 'starting again'.
Review of How to Survive in Teaching
This book is an honest portrayal of teaching in the UK right now. At times difficult to read (some teachers' experiences in school are horrendous!) but also vindicating when you realise that 'it's not just me' that feels like this about our education system. But, ultimately, this book is about action. Emma shares her passion and wisdom (she has over 20 years experience teaching) with lots of practical ideas for not only making our education system better from the ground up but by also letting teachers, old and new, realise there is so much they can do to improve their wellbeing, so that they can enjoy a long and rewarding teaching career. A must-read for all teachers whether you're about to jump ship or happy as you are. Teaching will only get better when we all take responsibility for ourselves and our colleagues, and Emma shows us how. This book offers advice, humour, and hope. What's not to like about that?
Review of How to Survive in Teaching
Found it hard to put this vibrant book down - it is so well written. Based on nearly 4,000 surveys and many interviews, Emma speaks for countless teachers and heads and does so with authority. The book faces up to the chaos happening in UK education right now, the despair and exhaustion that many feel, the desperate rates of attrition. And at the same time makes it clear that it is possible, not only to get through, but to grow and transform in the process of navigating this change. Very well researched, it provides loads of valuable links. It is brimming with stories and humour as well as very practical and realistic advice on what one can do to ease the journey. Whether still in training, a QT, a head, TA, governor or admin staff, this book will give you lots of insights, smiles and practical tips born out of a great love for this profession. A very special book.
